Traditionally, vegetation science has studied the composition of plant communities as a result of the local environmental conditions. There is increasing evidence, however, that plant communities actively change and shape their aboveground and belowground environment. This talk will not only discuss how these effects explain some very surprising phenomena, but also why they are important for understanding ecosystem responses to environmental change.
