You are cordially invited to join us for the launch of the Swiss Benin Initiative (BIS) report and its official handover to Prof. Abba Tijani, the Director General of the Nigerian National Commission for Museums and Monuments.
Over the last two years, the BIS has investigated the provenances of the Benin collections in Swiss public museums. Working with partners in Nigeria, it has identified works from the Kingdom of Benin, and sought to fill the gaps in the objects’ histories. A key question was whether the artworks were brought to Europe in the context of the British military looting of 1897.
