The collection of original works of antiquity spans a wide range in time from the 4th millennium BC to the middle of the 1st millennium AD and geographically from the western Mediterranean regions to the Tigris in the east and from the Nile in the south to the Crimea in the north. It provides visitors with deep insights into the lifeworlds of the extended Mediterranean region in antiquity through important works of art and craft. Highlights of the collection are Greek and Roman sculptures and portraits, masterpieces of Greek pottery, ancient paintings in the form of mummy portraits from the Fayyum, an Egyptian wooden coffin with a mummy and, last but not least, the monumental Assyrian reliefs from the royal palaces of Assurnasirpal II and Tiglatpileser III in Nimrud (Iraq).
